Travel To Italy

Italy is a long peninsula shaped like a boot, surrounded on the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the east by the Adriatic. It is bounded by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north. The Apennine Mountains form the peninsula's backbone; the Alps form its northern boundary  A chain of mountains, the Apennines, juts down the center of the peninsula. The fertile Po valley is in the north. It accounts for 21 percent of the total area; 40 percent of Italy's area,in contrast, is hilly and 39 percent is mountainous.running along Italy's border with Switzerland is a sequence of lakes that offer gorgeous scenery and a chance to experience a region in Italy that, while not undiscovered,   The Italian Lakes, which spread through the Piedmont and Lombardy regions,The largest of its many northern lakes is Garda (143 sq mi; 370 sq km); the Po, its principal river, flows from the Alps on Italy's western border and crosses the Lombard plain to the Adriatic Sea. Several islands form part of Italy; the largest are Sicily (9,926 sq mi; 25,708 sq km) and Sardinia (9,301 sq mi; 24,090 sq km).The climate of Italy is that of typical Mediterranean countries. Italy has hot, dry summers, with July being the hottest month of the year. In the north, they experience cold winters, as compared to mild ones in the south. Some regions in the south of Italy can experience no rainfall for the whole summer season. The long mountain ranges in Italy impact the weather significantly, as you can experience very different weather going from town to town.

Italy

Try to get on to Italy's time zone as soon as you leave home, try to eat and sleep on Italian time. Its easier if your flight arrives late in the day as you will probably want to sleep anyway.

Time to go :
April through mid-June and late September through October are the best months to visit Italy, according to Frommer's. During these times, crowds are sparser and the weather is milder. Many restaurants and hotels close between November and February, and attractions are not open as long in winter.

Alert:
Stay alert while in the cities as theft, bag snatching and breaking into cars is common. Theft is also common on trains – day and night, so keep your eyes peeled. Try to avoid carrying passports, credit cards, travel tickets and cash together in handbags or pockets.

Travel Documents :
you must make copies of your passport & any visa pages, insurance policy plus 24-hour emergency number & ticket details. Leave these copies, itinerary & contact details with family & friends.

Money Saving :
  • Avoid Breakfast: but I don't mean don't eat it, just don't eat it at your hotel. If you have the option of opting out of breakfast and getting something knocked off your hotel bill, do so. Usually hotel a breakfast costs anywhere from $5 to $15 per person
  •   Pass on the Bread: Restaurants will charge you extra for bread but not tell you about it when they give it you. Send it back if you don’t want to pay for it.

  • Drink Tap Water: Ask for tap water or you will get bottled water and have to pay for that too. Moreover, you can refill your bottles of water at any of the drinking fountains throughout Italy. The water is fine to drink.

  • Break the Law: Use this tip at your own risk. Most of the time, they don’t check tickets on trains. That’s all I’m saying.

  • Eat a Panini: Eating out in the popular cities of Italy is an expensive affair. Buy paninis and pizza for just a few Euro and save a lot of money.

  • Couchsurf: Accommodation is quite expensive in Italy, even in the hostels. Use the Couchsurfing service and stay with locals who have extra beds and couches for free.

  • Note: foreign tourists are entitled to a tax refund on goods and services. Save your receipts to take advantage of this when you leave the country. With the exchange rate the way it is, you’ll want to get every penny back!
Learn a little Italian :
Italians know that, unlike English or Spanish, their language is not very popular worldwide. Many contemporary Italians speak English and speak it well. This is especially true in larger cities and more touristy towns. Still, if you want to get on an Italian's good side (and be a polite traveler, as well) it pays to learn a bit of Italian before you go.

Buongiorno – Good day
Buonasera – Good evening/afternoon – it is customary to use one of these greetings when entering small shops
Arrivederci – Goodbye
Per favore – Please
Grazie – Thank you
Scusi – Excuse me
Parla inglese? – Do you speak English?
Non parlo italiano – I don’t speak Italian
Dov’è il bagno? – Where’s the bathroom?

Take a class, borrow or buy some language tapes or obtain a book of common phrases and vocabulary words and commit some of the beautiful Italian language to memory.

Getting Around in Italy :
Most of the time I recommend traveling through Italy by train, but there are all manner of transportation options for the country - and good reasons for choosing one over the other, or combining a few of them during one trip.
