The Lion

The lion is probably the species of the feline world famous. It is by its size, the second largest cat, just after the Siberian tiger.

The body of the lion is powerful and muscular and his hair is rather short. Its color can vary from very light beige to brown, through shades of gray or brown. The abdomen is usually much clearer in males as in females. The ears are short and rounded, coat color, and stained black in the back.

The difference in size between males and females is not the only feature of sexual dimorphism in this species. Only the male is indeed endowed with a mane, large mass of hair that starts growing at about the age of one year. Depending on the individual, it can vary in color but also by its density: indeed, some males have a mane that can descend along the back, or for some other belly.

According to experts, it could serve to intimidate potential opponents, but also to convey information to females in "good health". Studies have shown that females were more "attracted" by the towering, dark manes. It appears to represent an indication of experience, physical strength and thus, a possible indication of the male reproductive success. It is an important concept which is that the interest of each individual is to transmit its genes to the next generation, and it optimally. We will revisit this concept further, especially in terms of males who come to "take" a troupe.

If there are no known cases of black lions, however there are white lions, rare in nature and does not constitute different subspecies or a case of albinism.
